Artistic Abilities
Taken in Spring 2019, taught by Patrick Fahey, Concepts in Art Education described techniques in teaching, especially elementary art. Choice-based education was a focus, with students being the center of the decision making.
"The person making the art is the person creating decisions" - Dr. Fahey My teacher thus emphasized the importance of question-based critiques, leading the students to come to their own conclusions about what must be done with their artwork. As teachers, we mustn't use values to critique work - "I like it" - we should instead utilize what we observe to discuss how it can improve - "The sun makes me feel warm. What do you want me to feel looking at this?" This class also had a teaching opportunity for all students, as Colorado State University pairs with "Artistic Abilities," a nonprofit organization that creates art classes for community members with or without disabilities. CSU provides the teachers while the nonprofit organization provides students. As such, our task in this class was to teach a one-day-a-week two hour class for six weeks. My group created a class on pottery, with 3d artistic abilities being the emphasis. |
