Expectations, Redirection, B. F. Skinner
I believe in setting concrete expectations and redirecting when it comes to classroom management. I believe that the classroom setup has an integral role in focusing students, and I think part of that is influenced by B. F. Skinner’s theory of student behavior (and success) is influenced by their environment, among other things. I also noticed whilst being in classrooms that the setup will indicate early on where attention is to be had by students. Setups with students facing away from the front of the class, for example, might see worse behavior due to students being distracted from the teacher. Labelled and Organized Classroom In my art classroom, I plan to have rules clear on the walls, a few decorations to increase engagement and ideation, and one portion of the classroom devoted to calming down overstimulated students with no clutter on the wall, apart from the main business. TAB, Choice, Student Led and Centered I hope to run a TAB and Choice-centered classroom, with mostly student-driven activities. Students learn when they discover and practice of their own will in a student-centered environment, which the TAB and Choice activities will encourage. For example, students are naturally curious, but they get lost in expectations of the class, teacher, guardians, state, country of what they should be doing. I believe in standards-based grading to compliment the TAB style of teaching, as artists should be working to grow themselves rather than reach a grade. Standards Based Considering grading, I believe that formative assessment is much more informative than summative, but utilizing both in specific times is essential. Formative assessment leads to new goal setting, while summative assessment allows a new turn of focus. My classrooms will have authentic assessments being integrated wholly, with students being assessed on situations of artwork and investigations. Safety in the Artroom In order to create an environment conducive for student-led art activities, I believe it’s essential to introduce each tool in time so students can understand safety rules with each element of the classroom. All tools will be labelled and easy to find in the classroom, and thus easier to put away. Students need to understand safety rules so that they keep risks to themselves, each other, and the materials in the classroom safe. Differentiation, Accommodations There are many ways to differentiate and accommodate lessons for all learners. I will have gloves available for sensory comfort when working with different materials, and each lesson will appeal to all methods of learning to allow all students bridges to knowledge. When students’ needs are being met, they can focus and work successfully, which limits the disruptive behavior that is mostly preventable. |
